    The skills, expertise and goodwill of our employees is central to our continued success.

    Through our extensive training programme, we aim to equip our employees with the technical, leadership and management skills they require to be successful in the future.

    A particular focus on the development of our workforce continues to be on promoting diversity and opportunity to ensure the company is a great place to work for all.

    Training 

    We deliver training through a variety of courses including structured internal courses, toolbox talks, seminars and specialist colleges.

    In 2013/14 nearly 80% of our workforce - 1,813 people - took part in more than 400 different types of training courses.

    We have:

    • successfully achieved accreditation from the University of West of England for our Institute of Leadership and Management level 5 management development programme. This programme bridges the gap between our existing supervisory foundation and senior manager leadership programmes
    • continued to sponsor a number of managers to complete their level seven strategic leadership programme and actively encourage our highest achievers to convert their qualifications into MBAs. More than 30 employees are currently undertaking professional development towards chartered status in their chosen sector with eight attaining chartered status in 2013-14. 
    • 26 apprentices in our operations division and have launched an apprentice programme for 16 to 18-year-olds in our engineering and construction divisions and laboratory and customer contact centres 
    • achieved accreditation from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the IET apprenticeship scheme. These offer a further route for continued professional development for staff.

    Diversity 

    A diversity taskforce of senior managers has been set up to develop initiatives and policy to promote equality and diversity.

    The social enterprise, Women on Boards, has run development seminars for 60 female employees focused on their personal and career development and a female networking group has also been launched with regular external speakers to encourage debate around diversity issues.

    In total 2,220 people work for us: 556 women, 1664 men.  There are 13 directors - two women, 11 men - and 42 senior managers - five are women and 37 are men.

    We have a strong, friendly and positive culture - people enjoy working for the company and with each other. A survey giving staff the opportunity to feedback on topics such as leadership, training and career development revealed:

    • 79% have strong loyalty to the company
    • 87% rate the company as a good place to work
    • 82% feel encouraged to carry out work to the best of their abilities.

    We continue to work together with staff to identify areas for improvement and to make the company an even better place to work.
