You can save water in the garden this spring with these simple tips.

Tip 1: install a water butt

Around 85,000 litres of water falls on your roof each year - install a water butt and collect rainwater for your plants.

It's free plus your plants prefer rainwater and you could save up to 1,000 litres a year too!

Tip 2: use a watering can

Hoses and sprinklers typically use about 1,000 litres of water an hour.

Instead fill a watering can and water your garden in the evening or early morning when less is lost to evaporation.

    Use a watering can

Tip 3: buy drought tolerant plants

When you are buying new plants look for drought tolerant ones that require less watering.

For example, a convolvulus with small, silvery leaves or a strong-scented lavender with blue flowers.

    Buy drought resistant plants
